At the heart of Mahayana Buddhism is a radical teaching: form is emptiness, and emptiness is form. Empty of any permanent self nature. Avalokiteshvara the awakened being of great compassion tells Shariputra: "Remember that all manifested forms or no other than this emptiness. Emptiness is no other than all these manifested forms."

The sutra concludes with its famous Dharani:
Gate Gate Pāragate Pārasaṃgate Bodhi Swaha!

Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond—awakened mind, Swaha!
